Love as the surpassing way that remains

Clement is addressing the reader directly, showing from Paul and 1 John that love is the surpassing way to salvation, the one thing that remains when faith and hope pass away.

But you, learn the way according to excess that Paul points to for salvation. "Love does not seek its own things," but is poured out upon the brother. It is frantic for him, and soberly raves for him. "Love covers a multitude of sins" (1 Peter 4:8). "Perfect love casts out fear" (1 John 4:18). "It does not boast; it is not puffed up. It does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. Prophecies are abolished; tongues cease; healings are left behind upon the earth. But these three remain: faith, hope, love; and the greatest of these is love" (1 Corinthians 13:4-8, 13). And rightly so. For faith departs when we are persuaded by seeing God with our own eyes, and hope vanishes when the things hoped for are handed over. But love comes together into fullness and grows all the more when the perfect things are handed over. If someone casts this love into his soul, he can—even if he was born in sins, even if he has done many of the things that are forbidden—grow the love, receive pure repentance, and fight back against the things he has done wrong.
