Repentance opens the door to God

Clement has just said that love makes repentance possible even for great sinners; now he turns to the rich man and to anyone who has fallen after baptism, insisting that true repentance always finds God's door open.

Do not let this lead you into despair or recklessness, even if you learn who the rich person is who has no place in the heavens, and in what way someone using the things that exist might escape the difficulty of wealth and its danger to life, and might be able to enjoy the eternal good things. Suppose someone, whether through ignorance or weakness or involuntary circumstances, has fallen into certain sins or transgressions after the seal and the redemption, so as to be completely overcome. This person has been utterly condemned by God. For the doors have been opened to everyone who turns to God with truth from the whole heart, and the Father receives with exceeding joy a son who truly repents. True repentance is no longer being liable to the same sins, but rooting out completely from the soul the sins for which one has condemned oneself to death. For when these are destroyed, God will again take up residence in you. For he says that there is great and unsurpassable joy and a feast in heaven for the Father and the angels when one sinner turns and repents (Luke 15:7, 10). Therefore he has also cried out: "I desire mercy and not sacrifice" (Hosea 6:6). "I do not desire the death of the sinner, but repentance" (Ezekiel 33:11). "Even if your sins are like crimson wool, I will make them white as snow; even if they are blacker than darkness, I will wash them and make them like white wool" (Isaiah 1:18). For to God alone is it possible to grant forgiveness of sins and not to count transgressions, since indeed the Lord also commands us each day to forgive our brothers and sisters when they repent. If we, being evil, know how to give good gifts, how much more is "the Father of mercies" (2 Corinthians 1:3), the good Father "of all comfort" (2 Corinthians 1:3), the compassionate and merciful one, patient by nature! He waits for those who turn. And to turn truly from sins is to stop and no longer look back (Luke 9:62).
