Polycarp is warning the Philippians against false teachers, and now states the tests by which such people are known.

Anyone who will not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is an antichrist. Anyone who will not confess the testimony of the cross belongs to the devil. And anyone who twists the Lord's sayings to suit his own desires and says there is neither resurrection nor judgment—that man is the firstborn of Satan.

So let us abandon the vanity of the many and their false teachings, and turn back to the word that was handed down to us from the beginning. Let us be sober in prayer, persist in fasting, and in our petitions ask the all-seeing God not to lead us into temptation, as the Lord said: "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak" (Matthew 26:41).
