Abstain from those who deny the Eucharist

Ignatius is warning the Smyrnaeans against teachers who deny the real flesh of Christ, and now he turns to their practice of staying away from the Eucharist and prayer.

They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, the flesh that suffered for our sins and that the Father raised up in his goodness. So those who speak against the gift of God die in their disputing. It would have been better for them to love, so that they might also rise.

It is fitting to abstain from such people and not to speak about them either privately or publicly, but to attend to the prophets and especially to the gospel, in which the passion has been made clear to us and the resurrection has been brought to completion. Flee divisions as the beginning of evils.
