Follow the bishop as Christ follows the Father

Ignatius is writing to the church in Smyrna, urging them to do nothing apart from the bishop and to regard only the Eucharist celebrated under the bishop's authority as valid.

All of you follow the bishop, as Jesus Christ followed the Father, and follow the council of elders as you would the apostles. Respect the deacons as God's command. Let no one do anything that pertains to the church without the bishop. Let that Eucharist be considered valid which is under the bishop or under someone he has entrusted.

Wherever the bishop appears, there let the congregation be, just as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the whole church. It is not permitted to baptize or to hold a love-feast without the bishop. But whatever he approves, this is also pleasing to God, so that everything you do may be secure and valid.
