Do nothing apart from the bishop, as the Lord did nothing apart from the Father

Ignatius is addressing the Magnesians, urging them to act only in unity with their bishop and elders, just as the Lord acted only in unity with the Father.

The Lord was united with the Father, and so he did nothing without the Father, neither by himself nor through the apostles. In the same way, you must do nothing without the bishop and the council of elders. Do not even try to make anything appear reasonable to you privately. Instead, gather together in one place and have one prayer, one supplication, one mind, one hope in love, in the blameless joy, which is Jesus Christ, than whom nothing is better.

All of you, run together as into one temple of God, as to one altar, to one Jesus Christ, who came forth from one Father and is one and has returned to him.
