Treatise to Eulogius · §14

The Value of Labors and the Truth of Words

When a greater power is being given. Just as those digging into the roots of the earth unearth gold, so those descending into humility bring up virtues. Then the mind feels rest, once having cut off the causes of the passions and being occupied with contemplation; but before this toil, it feels exhaustion and hardship, approaching weakly to the struggle of the opposites.

CHAPTER 28. The elders most gladly accept a withdrawal occurring by degrees, if anyone has come to this having completed the virtues in communal life; and if he is able to make progress in the withdrawal, let him test himself. But if, being unable, he is diminished in virtue, let him return to the communal life, lest he fall from his senses, being unable to encounter the mechanisms of the thoughts. Just as sons provide consolation to a grieving widow, so also to a soul having fallen, labors provide consolation, which scatter the recognition of the thoughts, and sow the faith of repentance, and proclaim the mercies of Christ, and denounce the committed sins.

We ought, therefore, not to perform labors merely out of habit, but also with a consciousness of thanksgiving, so that the soul might not be found empty of such a philosophy; for if I understand the one giving the ends of the labors in each instance, let us seal it with thanksgiving. Just as a dog sitting by a baby snatches bread, so is an evil thought from the heart lacking understanding. Let us not, therefore, be enticed by the works of the opposites using wickedness, so that we do not surrender our soul to them for destruction. Just as the dance of the stars, bearing light, beautifies the sky, so the truth of the words, bearing a torch, beautifies the man. Let us therefore speak only one kind of truth, for the Lord dwells in one way in a house (Psalm 132:1). Just as fierce lightning bolts, having leaped, foretell thunder, so also precise sayings, approaching, signal faith. Let us therefore strive to be faithful to the truth, so that also into the...
