Clement is explaining why the rich wrongly think salvation is harder for them than for those without money, and he distinguishes two mistaken responses to Jesus' saying about the camel and the needle.
The reason salvation seems harder for the rich than for those without money is likely not a simple one, but varied. Some, hearing the Lord's voice at once and without reflection—that it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven (Mark 10:25)—despaired of themselves as having no hope of life. They granted everything to the world, hung upon the life here as the only one left to them, and turned away from the way there, no longer troubling themselves about whom the Master and Teacher calls rich, or how what is impossible for human beings becomes possible.Others understood this rightly and fittingly, but neglected the works that lead to salvation and did not make the necessary preparation to obtain what they hoped for.I say both these things about the rich who have perceived the power of the Savior and his glorious salvation; about the uninitiated in the truth I care little.
