Wealth as an instrument, not a cause
Clement is explaining that money and possessions are not to be thrown away, because they are instruments given by God for good use, and the real thing to renounce is the passions of the soul.
So money that also benefits our neighbors must not be thrown away. Possessions are called possessions because they can be possessed, and money is called money because it is useful, prepared by God for human use. These things lie at hand and are placed beneath us like some material and instruments for good use by those who know how. If you use an instrument skillfully, it is skillful; if you lack the skill, it enjoys the fruit of your lack of culture, though it is without blame. Wealth is an instrument of this kind. You can use it justly, and it serves righteousness. Someone uses it unjustly, and it is found to be a servant of injustice. For it has been born to serve, not to rule. We must not blame what has neither good nor evil in itself and is without blame, but rather what is able to use these things well or badly, depending on what it chooses, and is for that very reason the cause. That is the mind of a human being, which has within itself a free judgment and the power of self-determination in handling what has been given. So let no one destroy possessions rather than the passions of the soul, which do not permit the better use of what one has. Then, having become good and noble, he will be able to use these possessions well. The command to renounce all that one has and sell all that one has must therefore be understood in this way, as spoken about the passions of the soul.
