Think of Christ as God and judge; repay his mercy
The preacher opens his homily by addressing the congregation as brothers, urging them to think rightly about Jesus Christ and about their own salvation.
Brothers, this is how we ought to think about Jesus Christ: as God, and as the judge of the living and the dead. And we must not think small things about our salvation.
For when we think small things about him, we also hope to receive small things. And those who hear about these things as if they were small commit sin, and we ourselves sin because we do not know where we were called from, or by whom, or into what place, or how much Jesus Christ endured to suffer for our sake.
What recompense, then, will we give him? What fruit worthy of what he himself has given us? How many holy things do we owe him?
He granted us the light. As a father he called us sons. When we were perishing, he saved us.
What praise, then, will we give him, or what wage of recompense for the things we have received?
We were blind in the mind, worshiping stones and wood and gold and silver and bronze, the works of human hands. And our whole life was nothing other than death. So, wrapped in dimness and full of such mist in our sight, we regained our sight when we put off that cloud that wrapped us, by his will.
For he had mercy on us, and being moved with compassion he saved us, seeing in us much error and destruction, and seeing that we had no hope of salvation except the hope that comes from him.
For he called us when we did not exist, and he willed us into existence from nothing.

τίνα οὖν ἡμεῖς αὐτῷ δώσομεν ἀντιμισθίαν, ἢ τίνα καρπὸν ἄξιον οὖ ἡμῖν αὐτὸς ἔδωκεν; πόσα δὲ αὐτῷ ὀφείλομεν ὅσια;
ποῖον οὖν αἶνον αὐτῷ δώσομεν ἡ μισθὸν ἀντιμισθίας ὦν ἐλάβομεν;
