Cap. IX Arg. 11 Sol: absolute predestination/reprobation defined — decree to lead some by special grace to glory, deny that preparing mercy to others, and punish for final guilt of sin

The absolute predestination and reprobation we affirm depends on God's freest will. It means nothing other than his eternal decree. By that decree, of mere good pleasure and supreme mercy, he established to lead some infallibly to glory through the means of special grace. To others, of mere liberty of will, he denies that supreme mercy which prepares special grace. That denial presupposed, God sees them finally bound by sin's guilt, and decrees them punished for that guilt.

Latin

Praedestinatio et reprobatio illa absoluta, quam nos a liberrima Dei voluntate dependere asserimus, nil aliud designat quam aeternum illud Dei decretum, quo statuit pro mero suo beneplacito, et ex summa misericordia, quosdam per specialis gratiae media ad gloriam infallibiliter perducere, aliisque pro mera libertate voluntatis suae hanc summam misericordiam specialis gratiae praeparatricem denegare, qua negatione praesupposita, Deus videt eosdem reatu peccati finaliter constringendos, et propter eundem reatum decernit puniendos.
