Cap. IX Arg. 7 Sol: to reprobate is to permit by denying special grace — not to pour spiritual malice; media to death are deficient evils from us, not from God

To reprobate is, by denying special grace, to permit some to fall short of beatitude's end — not by pouring spiritual malice in to drive them by force into the abyss of misery. Add this: the media by which the predestined are led to life are supernatural goods, and so to be sought only from the Fountain of good — it belongs to God predestinating to provide efficacious media by whose intervention the predestined are saved. But the media by which the reprobate rush to death are spiritual evils — deficient, depraved acts — and so are sought not from the highest Good, nor from God as efficient, but from our implanted evil and a deficient cause. It is therefore inept and impious, because of an antecedent reprobation decree, to think God must produce in the reprobate unbelief, impenitence, and the like by which they are damned. Finally: unbelief, impenitence, and whatever counts as sin can be called media by which the reprobate himself procures his own death. But respecting the Reprobating One they are not media God effects and applies unto the reprobate's damnation — rather matter the reprobate brings forth from himself, God foreseeing and about that matter exercising his vindicative justice.
