Cap. II: Augustine vs Pelagius; dogma already rejected — no fresh refutation

Augustine supplies both. First, Epistle 89, where he hurls anathema at the Pelagians for that heresy: their claim that free choice alone is enough to keep the Lord's commands is to be anathematized and cursed outright. Second, On the Predestination of the Saints 1.18: God foresaw, says the Pelagian, who would be holy by free will's choice, and so before the world's founding he elected them in that very foresight by which he foresaw them to be such. But since theologians of every party already reject Pelagius and this Pelagian dogma — or at least want to look as if they have — I will not waste effort refuting what no one dares openly defend.

Latin

Utrumque colligitur ex Augustino: prius ex Epist. 89. Ubi Anathema vibrat contra Pelagianos ob haeresin praedictam, Illud quod dicunt, sufficere homini liberum arbitrium ad dominica praecepta implenda, omnino anathematizandum est, & omnibus exsecrationibus detestandum. Posterius ex De praedestin. Sanctor. lib. 1. cap. 18.
