The hidden depth of the Savior's words
Clement has just quoted the Gospel dialogue about the rich man and now explains how the Savior's words must be read.
“But the first will be last, and the last first” (Mark 10:31).
This is what is written in the Gospel according to Mark. And in all the other acknowledged Gospels, the wording may vary a little here and there, but they all display the same agreement of meaning.
We must know clearly that the Savior does nothing in a merely human way, but everything by divine and mystical wisdom. So we should not listen to his words in a fleshly way, but search out and thoroughly learn the hidden mind in them with the worthy inquiry and understanding they deserve.
For even the things the Lord himself seems to have spoken simply to his disciples are found to require no less attention now—indeed, even more—because of the surpassing excess of wisdom in them.
And where even the things thought to have been opened by him to those within, to those called children of the kingdom, still need greater care, how much more do the things that seemed to be spoken simply and were therefore not even questioned by his hearers, yet bear on the whole end of salvation itself?
These are veiled in a wondrous and supercelestial depth of thought, and it is not fitting to receive them superficially with the ears, but by sending the mind down to the very Spirit of the Savior and the secret of his purpose.
