The camel's deeper meaning and the right use of wealth
Clement is interpreting Jesus' saying about the camel and the needle's eye, first noting its hidden theological meaning, then drawing out its plain lesson for the rich.
Let the camel, then, also signify something higher as it reaches the rich person through the narrow and constricted way—a mystery of the Savior that can be learned in the exposition of first principles and theology. But for now, let the first and obvious meaning, the reason the parable was spoken, be presented. Let it teach those who have means that they must not neglect their own salvation as if they were already condemned in advance, nor must wealth be sunk in the sea again, nor condemned as a plotter and enemy of life. Instead, they must learn in what manner and how wealth must be used and life must be acquired. For since no one is destroyed simply because he is rich and afraid, and no one is saved simply because he is confident and believes he will be saved, come, let us consider what hope the Savior sketches out for them, and how what is hopeless might become secure, and what is hoped for might arrive at possession.
So the Teacher, when asked which is the greatest of the commandments, says: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your soul and with all your strength” (Deuteronomy 6:5 (cf. Mark 12:30)). He says that no commandment is greater than this, and very rightly so, for it was commanded concerning the first and greatest reality—God our Father himself, through whom all things came to be and exist, and to whom all that are saved return again. Since we were first loved by him and received our very coming into being, it is not holy to hold anything else as older or more precious than him. We repay this one small favor for the greatest gifts, and we have nothing at all to devise as recompense for a God who lacks nothing and is perfect. But by the very act of loving the Father, we receive incorruption as our own strength and power. For as much as someone loves God, by that much he slips further inside God.
