The Prefigurement of Resurrection in Lazarus§1

1A discourse by Amphilochius, Bishop of Iconium, concerning the four-day Lazarus. Bring again the evangelist John into the midst, for it is good to observe the firstfruits of the resurrection. For you heard him recently saying: Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom he raised from the dead (John 11:1-44). Did you see the firstfruits of the resurrection prefigured in Lazarus, which the faithful crowd recognized?

The crowds recognized, and the chief priests turned the miracle into malice. Thus they acted with malice toward the resurrection of Lazarus, because after his resurrection, which you heard, they consulted to kill him. Did you see excessive malice? The one whom the Lord raised, they themselves resolved to kill, not realizing that even if they kill, the Lord would again lightly raise the friend. They consulted to kill Lazarus; nothing so unsettled the Jews as the resurrection of Lazarus. Only this miracle they were not able to slander.

They slandered the sight of the blind man born from birth, saying: 'This is he; this is not he; he is like him.' They slandered the raising of the daughter of Jairus, saying that he had fallen and was not delivered by a complete death. They slandered the resurrection of the son of the widow of the only one, saying that he had fashioned death and was not overcome by the tyranny of death. They slandered the withered fig tree, saying it had been harvested and not withered by a masterly word. They slandered the changing of water into wine, saying that those at the supper were already intoxicated and did not know the mixture. They were not able to slander the resurrection of Lazarus alone.

They mourned for Lazarus; the man was prominent. They followed the lamentation, saw the tomb being sealed, and comforted according to custom, as if at a funeral feast of death, Martha and Mary, the sisters of Lazarus. They knew that he had been precisely four days in the tomb, having been laid there, and that a four-day corpse is everywhere decomposed, the flesh diminished, the bones exposed, the nerve-stability shattered, the entrails scattered, the stomach emptied. Realizing these things, when they saw the resurrection of Lazarus continuously whole, perfect as if from a potter, shining with re-living, they were disturbed.

They were quite despondent, not finding words of pretext, because this had prepared the reality of the Lord's resurrection to show how they would slander the resurrection of Lazarus. What is this, having prepared this for the reality of the Lord? Listen briefly. When Lazarus had naturally surrendered his present life, the Lord was not in Bethany present to the physical eyes.

The Arrival at Bethany and Martha's Grief§2

2But he is present everywhere by his divinity and fills all things. For after four days of Lazarus having been buried, Jesus came to Bethany to make a jest of the resurrection of his friend. Therefore, when the Lord had arrived in Bethany, as Martha, the sister of Lazarus, heard, she ran, she hurried, approaching him with a plea.ought to be saying to the Lord: 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died (John 11:21). And now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give to you (John 11:22).' But the Lord himself, being an ocean of patience, answered saying: 'What are you saying, Martha? You call him Lord, and you do not realize he is Lord? Was I not here? Wait a little; for in haste you will learn from your brother. For your brother will rise. I forgive you, Martha; for you are intoxicated with grief—just as it was said to her: 'he who is intoxicated with good wine stumbles'—when you become sober, then you will be of sound mind. For your brother will rise.'

And Martha, thus being swept along, brought back human words to the Lord, saying: 'I know that he will rise on the last day (John 11:23).' But the Lord to her: 'Why are you walking unsteadily, O Martha? Why do you rise up toward distant hopes regarding the resurrection? The resurrection is being discussed with you, and about the resurrection you discuss? I am the resurrection and the life; the one believing in me, even if he dies, will live (John 11:25-26).' While the Lord was saying these small things, all the city of Bethany ran toward the presence of the Lord, not to marvel but to laugh. For they did not have hope that a four-day-old dead man would rise. What then is the Lord?

When he saw such a great crowd running, and that they were worthy and sufficient for witnessing the one about to be raised from him, having answered them, he said: 'Where have you placed Lazarus? Does not the master of the place know the place?' He knew the place, but he was acting out the manner, so that all, having been compelled again, might follow Jesus, so that having received the resurrection by sight, they might become unshakeable witnesses. 'Where have you placed him?' And those having been questioned said to him: 'Come and see.' And as the Lord was walking and hurrying to the tomb, the crowd following behind struck out toward themselves, saying: 'What does this one want, to behold the tomb of Lazarus? If he is a son of God, he will raise this one.' For those approaching...

The Wisdom of Christ's Tears§3

3Regarding those who died, whom he raised, we do not know. How then can we know if they were delivered to a complete death? He will raise this one, and we receive knowledge that he is truly the Son of God.

Therefore also Martha, being drawn into these words, came to the Lord, herself saying: 'Where are you going, Master? Why do you want to see the tomb of Lazarus? Why do you seek our pain? Why do you stir up the grief? Why do you want to see the tomb? For you will gain nothing, Master; it is already smelling, for he has been four days.' But the Lord to Martha: 'Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?' (John 11:40). You say to me: 'It is already smelling.' The sister's body stinks, and you are smoking with unbelief? I want to see the tomb of my friend. Having said these things, the Lord went toward the tomb.

And having approached the tomb, he only saw the monument, and immediately he wept. What is the need to weep for one whom he was about to raise? He wept. Because of what? Listen intelligently. The Lord did everything wisely; for he wept at the tomb, so that he might make public to those who followed his will, what kind of suspicion they have concerning him.

Therefore also, as they saw him weeping, the following crowds, having again suffered humanly, began to argue among themselves and say: 'See how he loved him. The one raising the dead and giving sight to the blind was not able to do so that this one also might not die, if indeed he loved him thus?' But the Lord, when he saw them still speaking humanly, answered them: 'It was light for me to reserve the life of Lazarus just as that of Elijah and of Enoch, but none of you knew that by my will the life of Lazarus is reserved. Because of this, I endured, that death might lay him low, so that you might learn precisely that I have the authority over life and death.'

And immediately to them the Lord, as you all know clearly: 'Roll away the stone.' (John 11:39). He permitted it to the Jews: 'Roll away the stone.' See how he did everything wisely, making precise witnesses of the resurrection of Lazarus. 'Roll away the stone.' He permitted the disciples to move stones by word, and did he himself not roll away the stone? But everything wisely, as I said before, acting toward a resolution, he was saying to the Jews: 'Roll away the stone, so that from it the...

The Resurrection of Lazarus§4

4Let them learn from the removal of the corpse that it was stolen and not snatched away. Roll away the stone.

And those who rolled it away did so with murmuring—as the difficult, heavy corpse urged them on—but when those present rolled away the stone, immediately the Lord cried out, saying: 'Lazarus, come out here!' (John 11:43). The Caller is Master, and no one opposes Him. 'Lazarus, come out here: instruct Martha your sister as I command and do not entreat.' 'Lazarus, come out here. Before I come down, go out; in you is the earnest money, but in me is the full amount.' 'Lazarus, come out here.' And you, hearing, O friend, 'Lazarus, come out here,' do not be such as to have caused the Lord many voices. Once he spoke and raised him whom he had fashioned; for neither did he weep like Elijah, nor did he despair like Elisha. With a single-toned voice he breathed life into the one sleeping beside him, saying: 'Lazarus, come out here.' One is the word and diverse are the wonders. Only the Lord spoke: 'Lazarus, come out here,' and immediately the flesh was being replenished, the hairs were growing back, the sinews were being joined together, the veins were being filled with pure blood.

Hades, being cut from below, was sending Lazarus forth. The soul of Lazarus, being held back and being called upon by the holy angels, was being brought back to its own. And it was more glorious for all that, being bound from every side with wax, he walked without hindrance. Therefore also the Lord more urgently exhorted the crowds present, saying: 'Loose him and let him go. See the Lord's work and how He wisely manages all things.' For the certainty of those present, He said: 'Loose him and let him go; just as you rolled away the stone and showed the tomb and partook of the smell, so loose the burial cloths: some keeping them as a blessing, others guarding them as witnesses. If the chief priests and the Pharisees disbelieve that Lazarus rose, show them the burial cloths; manifest the rags as the paralytic did his bed (Luke 5:15). And we, carrying the branches of palms, let us say: Hosanna in the highest; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord (Matthew 21:9). To Him be the glory and the power with the all-holy and life-giving Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen.'
