Origen of Alexandria, Against Celsus 1.5
He takes up the question of idolatry as something that belongs especially to those who draw their teaching from the Word, and he reinforces his case by arguing that people should not regard handmade objects as gods, since it is not reasonable that things fashioned by the most worthless craftsmen—men of evil character, often unjust—should be considered divine. Wishing to show that this insight is not original to Christian teaching, he next cites a saying of Heraclitus: 'It is like someone who builds a shelter for houses and treats the lifeless idols inside as if they were gods to be approached.' The point is that, just as with other ethical principles, God has sown this understanding in human hearts; from that seed Heraclitus, and any other Greek or barbarian who grasped it, drew the same conclusion. He also adduces the Persians as holding this view, quoting Herodotus as his witness. We may add Zeno of Citium, who writes in his Republic: 'There will be no need to build temples; for nothing ought to be considered sacred or worthy of great honor and holiness, since temples are merely the work of builders and craftsmen.' It is therefore clear that this doctrine, too, has been written ‘in the hearts’ of men with the letters of God, showing what is to be done (Romans 2:15).
