Ignatius — Epistle to the Trallians 2
When you submit to the bishop as you would to Jesus Christ, I can see that you are not living by human standards. You live by Jesus Christ, who died for us so that, believing in his death, you might escape death.
So it is necessary, and you already do it, that you undertake nothing apart from the bishop. Submit also to the presbytery as to the apostles of Jesus Christ, our hope. If we make our life in him, in him we will be found.
The deacons, too, serve the mysteries of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 4:1), and they must please everyone in every way. They are not waiters handing round food and drink; they are servants of God's church. So they must shun every charge against them as they would shun fire.
