Bishops and Presbyters

Ignatius of Antioch, Epistle to the Smyrnaeans 9

Ignatius of Antioch · d. c. 110 AD

It is reasonable, from now on, that we come to our senses, while we still have time to repent and turn to God. It is good to know God and the bishop. Whoever honors the bishop has been honored by God. Whoever does anything behind the bishop's back is serving the devil.

So let everything overflow for you in grace, for you are worthy. You have given me rest in every way; may Jesus Christ give you rest. You loved me when I was away and when I was with you. God is your reward. Enduring all things for his sake, you will reach him.
