Ignatius of Antioch — Epistle to the Smyrnaeans 4

Ignatius of Antioch · Epistle to the Smyrnaeans · c. 110

I urge this on you, dear friends, knowing that you think as I do. But I am guarding you ahead of time against beasts in human shape. You must not welcome them. If you can, do not even meet them. Only pray for them, in case they might somehow repent. That is hard. But Jesus Christ, our true life, has power over it.

If what our Lord did was only an appearance, then my chains are only an appearance too. Then why have I handed myself over to death, to fire, to the sword, to wild beasts? No: near the sword is near God. Among the beasts is among God. Only in the name of Jesus Christ do I bear everything, so that I may suffer with him; and he, the perfect man, gives me strength (Philippians 4:13).
