John Chrysostom, Homilies on 1 Corinthians 29
Why then does it not happen now? … What then used to happen then? If someone was baptized, he immediately spoke in tongues — and not in tongues only, but many also prophesied, and some displayed still more powers.
For those coming from the idols, knowing nothing clearly and not raised on the old books, when baptized immediately received the Spirit; but they did not see the Spirit (for it is invisible), so the grace gave a perceptible proof of that working: one spoke at once in the Persian tongue, another in the Roman, another in the Indian, another in some other such language — and this made plain to outsiders that there was a Spirit in the one speaking.
And they had gifts, some lesser, some greater. Yet among them the gift of tongues was more than all — and this became a cause of schism for them, not from its own nature, but from the ungraciousness of those who received it.
