Augustine of Hippo, Sermon 267 (Pentecost)
Is the Holy Spirit not given now, brothers? Whoever thinks that is not worthy to receive him. He is given even now. Why then does no one speak in the tongues of all nations, as those filled with the Holy Spirit then used to speak? Why? Because what that signified has been fulfilled… The church then was in one house; it received the Holy Spirit: it was in a few people, yet it was in the tongues of the whole world. … For that the small church then spoke in the tongues of all nations — what is that, except that this great church from the rising of the sun to its setting speaks in the tongues of all nations? What was promised then is being fulfilled now.
Let no one say: “I have received the Holy Spirit; why do I not speak in the tongues of all nations?” … What the soul is to the body of a man, that the Holy Spirit is to the body of Christ, which is the church… in some saints he works miracles, in others he speaks truth… but they live together. A amputated member does not keep the soul — so a Christian cut off as a heretic is not followed by the Spirit.
Latin
Numquid modo, fratres, non datur Spiritus Sanctus? Quisquis hoc putat, non est dignus accipere. Datur et modo. Quare ergo nemo loquitur linguis omnium gentium, sicut loquebatur qui tunc Spiritu Sancto implebatur? Quare? Quia quod illud significabat, impletum est… Ecclesia tunc in una domo erat, accepit Spiritum Sanctum: in hominibus paucis erat, in linguis totius orbis erat…
