Send a runner to Syria to glorify God
Ignatius, writing to Polycarp of Smyrna, has just learned that the church in Antioch is at peace and now asks Polycarp to convene a council and appoint a messenger to Syria.
Since the church in Antioch of Syria is at peace, as I have been told, because of your prayer, I too have become more cheerful, free from care in God, if only through suffering I may attain God, so that I may be found in the resurrection as your disciple.
It is fitting, Polycarp, most blessed by God, to convene a gathering most befitting God and to ordain someone whom you hold very dear and who is untiring, one who can be called a courier for God. Deem this man worthy to go to Syria and glorify your untiring love for the glory of God.
A Christian has no authority over himself, but is devoted to God. This is God's work and yours, when you complete it. For I trust in grace, that you are ready for good-doing belonging to God. Knowing your intensity for the truth, I have encouraged you with few words.
