Ignatius is giving direct instructions to Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna, about how to order the church's life.

Do not neglect the widows. After the Lord, you yourself must be their caretaker. Let nothing happen without your judgment, and do nothing yourself without God. Indeed, you do not do so. Be steadfast.

Let the church meetings take place more frequently. Seek out everyone by name.

Do not despise slaves, whether men or women. But they too must not become conceited. Instead, let them serve all the more for the glory of God, so that they may obtain a better freedom from God. They must not long to be freed at the church's expense, lest they be found slaves of desire.
