Ignatius opens his letter to the church in Smyrna with a formal greeting, identifying himself and blessing the church.

Ignatius, who is also called Theophorus, to the church of God the Father and of the beloved Jesus Christ, which is in Smyrna in Asia. This church has been shown mercy in every gift, has been filled with faith and love, is lacking in no gift, is most befitting God and bearer of holiness. I rejoice greatly in a blameless spirit and in the word of God.
