From Syria to Rome: beasts, soldiers, and the wish for Christ

Ignatius, bishop of Antioch, is writing to the Roman church while being taken under guard from Syria to Rome, where he expects to be martyred by wild beasts.

From Syria all the way to Rome I am fighting wild beasts, through land and sea, night and day, bound to ten leopards, by which I mean a squad of soldiers. The better they are treated, the worse they become. Yet through their wrongdoings I am being made a disciple all the more, though I am not justified by this.

May I have joy of the beasts prepared for me, and I pray that they will be found prompt for me. I will even flatter them to devour me quickly, not as with some, whom they timidly refused to touch. And if they themselves are unwilling and refuse, I will force them.

Forgive me: I know what is good for me. Now I am beginning to be a disciple. May nothing of things visible and invisible envy me, so that I may attain Jesus Christ. Fire and cross and packs of beasts, cuttings, tearings, scatterings of bones, mangling of limbs, grinding of the whole body, evil punishments of the devil, let them come upon me, only so that I may attain Jesus Christ.
