Submission to bishop, elders, and deacons

Ignatius is writing to the church in Tralles, urging them to live in unity under their bishop, council of elders, and deacons.

When you submit to the bishop as you would to Jesus Christ, it is clear to me that you are not living in a merely human way. You are living according to Jesus Christ, who died for us so that by believing in his death you might escape death itself.

So it is necessary, as you are already doing, that you do nothing without the bishop. Submit also to the council of elders as you would to the apostles of Jesus Christ our hope, in whom we will be found if we live in him.

The deacons, since they serve the mysteries of Jesus Christ, must please everyone in every way. They are not deacons of food and drink, but servants of the church of God. They must therefore guard themselves against accusations as they would guard against fire.
