The Letters of Ignatius · §2.11 · Ignatius of Antioch

Why Ignatius warns against empty glory

Ignatius is writing to the Magnesians, explaining that his warning about Judaism and false teaching is not because he knows them to be at fault, but because he wants to protect them.

Now, my beloved, I am not writing these things because I have learned that any of you are actually in this condition. I write because, as one who is less than you, I want to guard you beforehand, so that you do not fall into the hooks of empty glory. Be fully assured instead in the birth, the passion, and the resurrection that took place in the time of the governorship of Pontius Pilate. These things were truly and certainly accomplished by Jesus Christ, our hope. May none of you ever be turned aside from Him.
