The Lord's ointment and the gift of knowledge

Ignatius is warning the Ephesians against false teachers who corrupt faith, and now explains why the Lord received ointment on his head and why believers should accept the knowledge of God.

This is why the Lord received anointing on his head: so that he might breathe incorruption into the church. Do not anoint yourselves with the foul odor of the teaching of the ruler of this age, lest he take you captive from the life set before you.

Why do we not all become wise, since we have received the knowledge of God, which is Jesus Christ? Why do we perish foolishly, failing to recognize the gift that the Lord has truly sent?

διὰ τί δὲ οὐ πάντες φρόνιμοι γινόμεθα λαβόντες θεοῦ γνῶσιν, ὅ ἐστιν Ἰησοῦς Χριστός; τί μωρῶς ἀπολλύμεθα, ἀγνοοῦντες τὸ χάρισμα, ὃ πέπομφεν ἀληθῶς ὁ κύριος;
