Fragments on Hebrews · §27 · Cyril of Alexandria

Faith and Obedience

A remnant of humanity is left to women and children, while the one who has faith has something to boast about.

Abraham, who had faith, offered his son Isaac when he was being tested, and this is a great wonder that I am unable to depart from.

The blessed Abraham, an old man who was childless, sought an heir from God, and after receiving Isaac, he was commanded to sacrifice him.

Abraham's faith was so strong that he overcame the storm of testing, and this is a testament to the stability and safety of holy thoughts, as the most law-abiding Paul will teach, saying Abraham offered Isaac when being tested, having calculated that God is able to raise even from the dead (Hebrews 11:19).

Oh, the stability of faith; oh, the safety of holy thoughts; he gave to God the power to accomplish all.

Abraham believed God and it was reckoned to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6), for he endured the cross, despising shame, instead of the joy set before him.

He emptied himself, sitting among us, so that, having overcome death in the flesh, then, having conquered it through the resurrection from the dead, he would declare to us that it is possible to return to life.

As the Son of God, he voluntarily took on the most dishonorable and inglorious death, without sparing himself from it, but through his resurrection, he was glorified and abolished the shame and ugliness of his humiliation.

The Son's glory is undeniable, and his resurrection has overcome corruption and abolished shame, declaring to us that it is possible to return to life.

Daniel writes that the Ancient of Days sits on a throne, with a thousand thousands of those ordained for service and ten thousand times ten thousand of those who attend, standing around him (Daniel 7:9-10).

Isaiah also saw the Son in glory, saying 'I saw the Lord Sabaoth sitting on a high throne, and the house was full of his glory, and Seraphim stood around him' (Isaiah 6:1-3).

Christ sat at the right hand of the throne of God.

The scripture teaches that Abraham's faith led him to a great end, for it is written, 'He believed God and it was reckoned to him as righteousness' (Genesis 15:6).
