Theophilus of Antioch, To Autolycus 30

Theophilus of Antioch · fl. c. 180 AD

Cain also fathered a son named Enoch, and he built a city which he named after his son Enoch (Genesis 4:17). From that point onward the building of cities began, and this occurred before the flood; not as Homer falsely says, 'For not yet had a city been built for mortal men.'

To Enoch was born a son named Gaidad; Gaidad fathered Meel, Meel fathered Mathusala, and Mathusala fathered Lamech. Lamech took two wives, Ada and Sella, and from that time the practice of bigamy and the origin of music began. Lamech had three sons: Obel, Jubal, and Tubel. Obel became a man who lived in tents and raised livestock; Jubal was the one who introduced the psaltery and the harp; and Tubel became a metalworker, forging copper and iron.

Thus the line of Cain had a recorded catalog up to this point, but afterward his genealogy fell into oblivion because he had murdered his brother. In place of Abel, God gave Eve to conceive and bear a son named Seth, from whom the rest of humanity descends to this day. For anyone who wishes and loves to learn, it is easy to demonstrate every generation through the holy scriptures. A partial account has already been given in another work, as we noted above, outlining the genealogy in the first book of histories. The Holy Spirit teaches us all these things through Moses and the other prophets, so that our sacred writings are shown to be more ancient and also more true than those of any other writers and poets.

Some have foolishly claimed that Apollo invented music, while others say Orpheus discovered it from the sweet song of birds. Their claims are empty and vain, for these figures lived many years after the flood.

The account of Noah, who is also called Deucalion by some, has been presented in the book mentioned earlier; if you wish, you may examine it as well.
