Tatian, Address to the Greeks 6
Because of this, we believe that bodies will be raised after the completion of all things, but not in the way the Stoics teach. They claim that the same things come into being and pass away in endless cycles, serving no useful purpose. We hold instead that this will happen once, because the ages allotted to us have reached their end, and the final constitution of things will take place for the sake of judgment through the deeds of men. We will not be judged by Minos or Rhadamanthus; in their myths no soul was judged before death, but the Creator God himself becomes the judge. Even if you consider us foolish and chattering, we are not concerned, for we have put our trust in this word. Just as I did not exist before I was born — I had no awareness of being anyone, but only existed in the substance of fleshly matter — and having come into being, I found existence through birth; so also, though I cease to be and am no longer seen through death, I will be again, just as I was not before and then was born. If fire consumes my flesh, the world receives the evaporated matter; if I am dissolved in rivers or seas, or torn apart by wild beasts, I am stored in the treasuries of a rich Master. The poor and godless man does not know what has been laid up, but God the reigning King, when he wills, will restore the visible substance that only he can see to its original state.
