Lactantius, Divine Institutes 7.19
Therefore when the circle of the earth has been oppressed and human resources for destroying a tyranny of immense strength have failed — since, the world captured, he will settle on it with great armies of robbers — that so great calamity will need divine help. God, therefore, moved both by the double danger and by the pitiable outcry of the just, will at once send a liberator. Then mid-heaven will be opened in the dead and dark night, so that in the whole world the light of God descending may appear like lightning; which the Sibyl spoke in these verses: when he comes, there will be a smoky fire in the midst of black night.
This is the night which is kept by us with a vigil because of the coming of our King and God: of which night there is a double account, that in it he both then received life, when he suffered, and afterward will receive the kingdom of the whole world. For he is the liberator and judge and king who will destroy that evil one with his word and free the just.
Latin
Oppresso igitur orbe terrae cura ad destruendam inmensarum uirium tyrannidem humanae opes defecerint, siquidem capto mundo cum magnis latronum exercitibus incubabit, diuino auxilio tanta illa calamitas indigebit. commotus igitur deus et periculo ancipiti et miseranda conploratione iustorum mittet protinus liberatorem. tum aperietur caelum medium intempesta et tenebrosa nocte, ut in orbe toto lumen descendentis dei tamquam fulgur appareat; quod Sibylla his uersibus elocuta est:
