Justin Martyr, First Apology 65
After the person who has been convinced and has assented is washed in this way, we bring them to the so-called brothers, where they are gathered together, so that we may offer common prayers for ourselves, for the one who has been enlightened, and for all others everywhere. We pray so that, having learned the true things, we may be deemed worthy and be found to be good citizens through our deeds and guardians of the things entrusted to us, so that we may be saved for eternal salvation. We greet one another with a kiss after the prayers have ended.
Then bread, a cup of water, and wine are offered to the one presiding over the brothers. He takes them and offers praise and glory to the Father of all through the name of the Son and the Holy Spirit, and he makes a lengthy thanksgiving for having been deemed worthy of these gifts by him. When he has finished the prayers and the thanksgiving, all the people present shout out, saying: Amen. In the Hebrew language, Amen means "so be it." After the presider has given thanks and all the people have shouted, those we call deacons give each of those present a share of the bread, wine, and water over which thanks has been given, and they carry it to those who are absent.
