Ignatius — Epistle to the Philadelphians 7

Ignatius of Antioch · Epistle to the Philadelphians · c. 110

For even if some wished to deceive me according to the flesh, the Spirit is not deceived, for it is from God. It knows where it comes from and where it is going (John 3:8), and it lays bare what is hidden. While I was with you I cried out; I spoke with a loud voice, God's own voice: "Pay attention to the bishop, to the presbytery, and to the deacons."

Some suspected that I said this because I already knew of the split among certain people. But the One in whom I am bound is my witness that I did not learn it from human flesh. The Spirit was preaching, saying this: "Do nothing without the bishop. Guard your flesh as God's temple. Love unity. Run from divisions. Become imitators of Jesus Christ, as he is of his Father (1 Corinthians 11:1)."
