Hippolytus — Refutation of All Heresies 10.34
Taught who the true God is, you will escape these things. You will have an immortal body, incorruptible together with the soul, and you will receive the kingdom of the heavens — you who lived on earth and came to know the heavenly King. You will be a companion of God and co-heir with Christ, no longer enslaved to desires or passions and diseases.
For you have become god: whatever sufferings you endured as a human, he was giving (because he is one human); and whatever belongs to God, God has promised to provide, because you were deified, begotten immortal. That is what “Know yourself” means: recognizing the God who made you. For to know yourself turns out to be to be known by the one who calls you.
So do not be enemies to yourselves, humans, and do not hesitate to turn back. For Christ is the God over all, who ordered sin to be washed away from humans, making the old human new, having called him image from the beginning and showing through that type his affection for you. Obeying his solemn commands and becoming a good imitator of the Good, you will be like him, honored by him. For God is not impoverished when he also makes you god for his glory.
