Commodian — Instructiones 7
Concerning Sun and Moon: though they are present to us, you err; what I once thought, you think must be prayed to. They are among the stars, but they do not run by their own will. The Omnipotent, when he first founded all things, placed them there with the stars on the fourth of the days. ****** And indeed he ordered into law that no one adore them. You pray to so many gods who promise nothing about life, whose law is not on earth, nor are they themselves foretold. But a few empty priests seduce you, who say divinities somehow profit a man about to die. Approach the law’s book and learn the true.
