Commodian — Instructiones 56
If certain teachers, while they wait for your gifts or fear persons, loosen single things for you — I too do not “teach,” but I am forced to say the truth. With the Evil one’s crowd you go to empty spectacles, where Satan prepares tricks with crashes; you persuade yourself it is allowed, wherever it will please. Mixed, offspring of the Most High, with the sons of the Devil, you do not want to look back at the former things you renounced. You turn again in those very things: what will the One profit? Or if something given for weakness you foolishly profane… Do not love the world nor its ambition: so great is God’s voice, and to you it seems light. You keep a human’s command and slight God’s; you trust a gift, because teachers shut their mouths so they are silent and do not say divine orders to you.
If you were to scorn me saying true things, look to the Highest: whose son you were, assign yourself to him as client. If you seek to live as a gentile, faithful human, the world’s joys remove you from Christ’s grace; what you lightly presume is allowed without discipline, and you seek theater choruses and music songs, nor do you care that offspring is emptied by such madness. While you think to enjoy life, unseeing you err. The Most High lives, and you slight the just precepts.
