Commodian — Instructiones 47
Let birds and beasts of the woods be deceived by foods: an incautious nature of mind has been handed to them; they are caught by tricks or following bait, and they do not know how to avoid evil nor are they held by law. Law has been given to the human and a teaching of life to be read, from which he remembers so he can live carefully, and also may refuse his place and the things that are of death. He condemns himself heavily who offends the king: either he is bound with iron or cast down from the dignity of rank, or deprived of life he will lose what he ought to enjoy. Warned by the example do not sin heavily; transferred by the washing rather have charity, and avoid far the bait of the trap where death is. There are many martyrdoms that are without blood poured. Not to desire another’s, to want to have martyrdom, to rein the tongue, to make yourself humble — you ought; not to do violence of yourself nor to return it when done — be a patient mind: understand that you are a martyr.
