Ignatius of Antioch, Epistle to the Smyrnaeans 1
I give glory to Jesus Christ, the God who has made you this wise. I have seen that you are made complete in a faith that cannot be shaken, as though you were nailed to the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ in flesh and in spirit, and set firm in love by the blood of Christ.
You are fully convinced about our Lord. He is truly of David's line according to the flesh (Romans 1:3), and Son of God by God's will and power. He was truly born of a virgin. He was baptized by John so that all righteousness might be fulfilled by him (Matthew 3:15).
Under Pontius Pilate and Herod the tetrarch he was truly nailed for us in the flesh. We are of that fruit, the fruit of his God-blessed passion. So it was that through his resurrection he might raise a banner for the ages (Isaiah 5:26; Isaiah 49:22) for his saints and his faithful ones, Jews or Gentiles alike, in the one body of his church.
