Arnobius — Against the Nations 2.42
42.1. Did he therefore send souls so that some might infest the paths of roads, others circumvent the unknowing, forge false wills, mix poisoned drinks, break into houses by night, solicit, drive off, prevaricate and betray, shake pickiness of tastes from the palate, know how to keep slipping fatness in cooking fatted birds, make spiral cakes and sausages, force-meats, fort-sausages, Lucanian ones, with these born flesh and iced seasoned meats?
2. Did he therefore send souls so that things of a holy and most august name might practice symphonic and pipe-playing arts, puff out cheeks by blowing pipes, lead the way with obscene songs, and rhythmically raise noises with stampings of foot-clappers, by which another wantoning multitude of souls might be dissolved into disordered motions of bodies, dance and sing, turn dancing circles and at last, buttocks and hips lifted, undulate with writhing of the loins?
3. Did he therefore send souls so that among males there might be catamites, among women harlots, sambuca-players, harpists, so that they might prostitute bodies for sale, publish their cheapness to the people, ready in brothels, meeting in fornication-houses, refusing to suffer nothing and prepared even for the violation of the sacred mouth?
3. Idcirco animas misit, ut in maribus exsoleti, in feminis fierent meretrices sambucistriae psaltriae, venalia ut prosternerent corpora, vilitatem sui populo publicarent, in lupanaribus promptae, in fornicibus obviae, nihil pati rennuentes et ad oris sacri conparatae constuprationem?
