Hear and give ear; do not exalt yourselves
One chapter having been marked off, let us also see what the other teaches us: 'Hear and give ear, and do not exalt yourselves, for the Lord has spoken. Give glory to the Lord our God before it grows dark, and before your feet stumble on dark mountains; and you will wait for light, and there is a shadow of death, and they will be placed into darkness.' (Jeremiah 13:16)
'But if you do not hear in a hidden way, your soul will weep from before insult, and your eyes will bring down tears, because the Lord's flock was crushed.' He wants the same people both to hear and to give ear, not content either with their hearing alone or with their giving ear. Therefore he says: 'Hear and give ear.' Then after this he commands them not to exalt themselves, and teaches what must be done. What then is hearing and what is giving ear? Let us understand from the wording itself. 'Give ear'—receive into the ears; and 'hear'—if it is said in distinction from 'give ear'—perhaps is: receive into the mind. And among the things said in the Scriptures some are more ineffable and more mystical, and some are useful at once to those who understand. About the more ineffable I think 'hear' is said; about those useful at once and able without interpretation to benefit the hearer, 'give ear.' So if we examine the whole Scripture we will say, becoming 'approved bankers': hear this, but give ear to that.
Then when we have heard and given ear, he commands us: 'And do not exalt yourselves.' (Matthew 11:29) For 'everyone who exalts himself will be humbled.' (Isaiah 5:30 (cf.) And the Savior too, in saying, 'Learn from me that I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls,' (Jeremiah 13:16; Ps 23:4) teaches us not to exalt ourselves. For among the other human evils this sin also is much in us—sometimes exalting ourselves quite irrationally and over what one ought not exalt oneself even in the least, and sometimes with a semblance of reason, that what we exalt ourselves over is reasonable, yet even over that exaltation is not sound.
