Notes on the Apocalypse
Scholia in Apocalypsem
Pantainos, Heraclas, and examining heresy and philosophy§1
1While I was devoted to the Word and our discipline was spreading, heretics approached at times, and at other times students of Greek learning — above all of philosophy. So it seemed right to test the heretics teachings and what the philosophers claim about the truth. In this we followed Pantainos, who before us had helped many and was well prepared in those things, and Heraclas, now seated among the Alexandrian elders, whom I found already five years with the philosophical teacher before I myself began those lectures. For his sake he had laid aside ordinary dress, taken the philosophers cloak, and still wears it; and as he is able he never stops reading Greek books.
