Theophilus of Antioch, To Autolycus 12

Theophilus of Antioch · fl. c. 180 AD

No human can adequately explain the narrative and entire ordering of the six days, not even with countless mouths and tongues; nor would anyone suffice, even after living countless years in this life, to speak worthily of these things, because of the surpassing greatness and wealth of God's wisdom contained in this aforementioned six-day account.

Many writers have imitated and attempted to narrate these matters, drawing their starting points from here—whether concerning the world's creation or human nature—yet not one has uttered anything worthy of truth. The words of philosophers, writers, and poets may seem credible due to their polished phrasing, but their discourse proves foolish and empty, for it contains much nonsense and no truth. Even when something true appears to be spoken through them, it is mixed with error. Just as a poisonous drug blended with honey or wine or anything else renders the whole mixture harmful and useless, so the verbosity in their works proves idle talk and harm rather than benefit to those who trust it.

As for the seventh day, which all people name yet most do not understand: the Hebrews call it Sabbath, which translates into Greek as 'seventh day'; it is named among every kind of human, but the reason for the name remains unknown. The poet Hesiod's claim that Chaos begot Erebus, Earth, and Eros—who, he says, rules over both gods and humans—proves idle, cold, and alien to all truth; for God ought not to be overcome by pleasure, when even self-controlled people abstain from every shameful pleasure and evil desire.
