Barnabas, Epistle of Barnabas 5
The Lord endured handing over his flesh to corruption so that we might be cleansed by the forgiveness of sins through the blood of his sprinkling (Isaiah 53:5). Scripture speaks of him both to Israel and to us: he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities, and by his stripes we are healed; like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, he did not open his mouth (Isaiah 53:7). Because of this we owe the Lord overflowing thanks, for he has revealed the past to us, made us wise in the present, and given us understanding for the future. As Scripture says, 'The net is not spread in vain for the winged'—meaning that a person who knows the way of righteousness yet turns himself toward darkness justly perishes (Zechariah 13:7).
Brothers, consider: if the Lord endured suffering for our souls, even though he is Lord of all the world—to whom God said at the foundation of the world, 'Let us make man in our image and likeness'—how could he endure suffering at human hands? Learn this: the prophets, gifted by him, prophesied about him. He endured, so that he might abolish death and demonstrate the resurrection from the dead; it was necessary for him to be revealed in the flesh. He did this to fulfill the promise to the fathers and, while preparing a new people for himself on earth, to show that he, having brought about the resurrection, will judge. He taught Israel to the very end, performed such great signs and wonders, preached, and loved them exceedingly.
When he chose his own apostles—those who would proclaim his gospel—he picked men more lawless than any sinner, to prove that he came not to call the righteous but sinners. At that point he revealed himself as the Son of God. If he had not come in the flesh, no one could have been saved by seeing him; human beings cannot even stare at the sun, a mere work of his hands, because they cannot endure its rays. Therefore the Son of God came in the flesh to sum up the full measure of sins for those who persecuted his prophets to death. That is why he endured. God speaks of the stroke upon his flesh as coming from them: 'When they strike their shepherd, the sheep of the flock will perish' (Zechariah 13:7). Yet he himself willed to suffer this way, for it was necessary that he suffer on the wood. The prophet foretelling him says: 'Spare my soul from the sword'; 'Pierce my flesh, for assemblies of the wicked have risen against me.' And again: 'Behold, I have given my back to scourges and my cheeks to slaps; I have set my face like a flint.'
